The once again newly refurbished Hammersmith Palais is packed, the show is sold out, the heat is unpleasantly crushing and Courtney's voice struggles.....The Dandy Warhols are touring Europe, on the back of their newly released fifth LP: ' Odditorium or the Warlords of Mars...'
Tonight the Dandys are particularly laid back, at times seemingly going through the motions, but once warmed up, after the first 2 or 3 numbers, we are treated to a tight and powerful healthy mix of old and new, greatest hits and sublime album tracks.Whenever required, a fifth, trumpet playing Dandy appears on stage, giving tracks like Godless, All the money or the simple life honey...a beautiful finishing touch.
Unfortunately, and I assume, due to Courtney's voice problems, the set is quite short and they leave the stage at 22:40, cruelly depriving us of an encore and some crowd pleasers such as We used to be friends, Every day should be a holiday...
I regretfully have to admit that this was not their best live performance, by a long shot, and certainly would have left first timers, walking away disappointed and confused. From previous experience, I know that tonight is not the norm from this amazing quartet. I also accept that somehow, the Dandy Warhols have earned the right to an off night, but I just hope that it won't be too long before they're back in London, proving any negative critics wrong.
