The Go! Team - La Cigale - Paris, november 5th 2005

Paris is burning (literally) and France may be on the brink of a civil war but right now I am totally oblivious to the world's misfortunes as I am standing in a small parisian theatre, being transported to a better place by none other than The Go! Team and their infectious joie de vivre.

It's a pleasure to watch this Brighton - London based, multi-instrumentalist, mega talented motley crew of 6. They may have pushed the retro theme a decade further than the current 80s revival and tonight the audience is far too young to have experienced 70s culture first hand, but the theatre totally erupts as the Team gets on stage.

Ninja is a brilliant front woman, displaying enviable levels of energy, working the crowd... at times in her best possible French. Slices of happiness - Huddle formation, Get it together, Panther dash, Bottle rocket... - are coming thick and fast. We are fascinated as Ian Parton, Jamie Bell and Sam Dook swap instruments with each number. At one point, Chi Fukami taylor, abandons her drum kit and treats us to a fine bit of singing.

Mid set, the Team introduces a new track 'Titanic vandalism' and I am pleased to report that it is just as uplifting as what we have come to expect from these guys.

A steady stream of the audience jumps on stage and then back in the crowd, others crowd surf, some sing. I can see three 8-9 year olds, jump up and down non-stop for an hour (they'll sleep good tonight). Before our eyes, we have six accomplished musicians smiling at each other and themselves, seemingly pleased to be here, pleased to be on stage together, pleased with the public's reaction to what they have to offer us, and coming together as a great Holy union. Englo-French relations have never been healthier.
