The time is now for the Kaiser Chiefs, these northern upstarts, as they play to a packed Brixton Academy and such is the fickle nature of the music business that it may never get better than this for the Kaisers and you can't blame them for absorbing the adulation from a crowd in complete harmony with them.

The set relies mostly on the one and only debut album, the Mercury Prize nominated ' Employment', and boasts to date three hit singles,'Every day I love you less and less', ' Oh my God' and the anthemic crowd pleaser ' I predict a riot', and such is their overwhelming confidence, they can afford to play it halfway through the set instead of the obligatory encore. But it isn't just the singles that turn on the heat, album tracts 'Na na na na nah' and the marvelous ' What did I ever give you' are standouts that deserve to be released as singles. |

Vocalist Ricky Wilson is not your normal 'heart throb' frontman who displays a non satorical elegance in costume, but his performance tonight exudes warmth and genuine affection. Indeed he plucks out a female fan from the audience and performs a waltz with her, generously allowing her to take centre stage. The energy levels are extraordinary and at one point, Wilson is crowd surfed from the back of the auditorium to the front, but this is no ' one man show', band members Nick Hodgson on drums, keyboard player Peanut, bassist Simon Rix and guitarist Andrew White all pull together to make this very much a band collective.

They encore with a sped up version of Marvin Gaye's 'Heard it through the grapevine' and a crowd singalong 'Oh my God', which goes a long way to dispel the myth that it's grim up north.

Florence says : The next Kaiser Chiefs performances are only a short Eurostar ride away : Lille on the 05.11 and Paris on the 06.11 as part of 'les inrocks' festival. What a good excuse for a baguette and cheese munching, wine guzzling week-end away !! |
