Blue Man Group - New London Theatre - London, december 23th 2005

Aaaaah! The Blue Man Group.... Live! It’s just like giving birth!

Never mind in how much details your ‘already been there’ friends will go into, you really need to experience it for yourself to truly understand what it’s all about.

And that is the beauty of this award winning show, having read reviews you think that you know what to expect and yet you’re just kidding yourself, because this show is impossible to fully describe, being in a league of it’s own, being so complex and being such a blast for almost 2 hours.

There is no interval and you soon understand why. As soon as the lights dimmed you involuntarily stepped on the craziest roller coaster imaginable, and since when do these kind of rides stop midway to let you get off and buy a drink?

Before taking your seat, a member of staff will hand you a strip of white tissue paper to tie around your forehead and the first 3 or 4 rows of spectators have also been asked to wear transparent full length plastic waterproofs!
You seat down, stare at the empty stage with its rather sinister industrial looking set, pipes everywhere, feeling nervous and anxious thinking ‘why do I need to look like a Japanese kamikaze and what will happen to these poor people at the front, wrapped up in plastic?’, ‘Is it still time for me to escape?’.
Well, I’ve worked out that the plastic macs will protect the theatre’s best seats from unwelcome bodily fluids occurring from too much laughing.

The bright lights are killed and the ride starts. Within minutes you realise you won’t be able to get off, not because they’ve locked the doors (I don’t think that would be legal) but because you are totally mesmerised, all your senses are alive and somehow you have become one with the rest of the audience.

So much colours, swirling lights, activities, great sounds and hilarious multimedia theatrics will be thrown at you, from all directions that you can’t be sure how much your brain has actually registered. You could suffer unexpected, smile inducing flashbacks for days!
But beware, as far as this partly vaudevillian show is concerned God is in the detail, so watch out for every single subtle eye movement or head nodding.
Also, the interactions between the Blue men and the audience is totally addictive because at times worrying !!

For my part and as a recidivist I can only say that founders, writers, producers...Matt Goldman. Phil Stanton and Chris Wink have found a perfect, finely balanced and winning formula of quality comedy (often unspoken), brilliant lights and shades show and good music.
All the elements required for a good night out have been thought of:
- Paint splashing.
- Projectile vomiting.
- Public humiliation of audience members.
- Sarcasm.
- Lesson in plumbing.
- Toilet humour.
- 3 fit looking, multi-taskings bald guys in blue latex mask. Quite kinky
one could say (No! apparently that’s just me).
- And a lot more...

The very best however are the musical interludes: 3 Blue men playing percussion on PVC pipes, (best suited to your DIY store), to astonishing results, accompanied to great effect by a live band. See ‘Playing on my iPod’ for sampler.

To conclude, catch the Blue Man Group before they fly back to the States, you would be a fool not to.

Whatever happens do not be late or miss the show’s finale, as it will leave you stunned and exhilarated for long after it’s ended.

Do not forget to purchase a CD on your way out, as tracks from the show have made their way to a Grammy award nominated album that will be the most useful and best reminder of such a mind blowing evening.
