This is the first of three sold out shows at the Brixton Academy, it’s past 9pm and the crowd eagerly awaits Goldfrapp’s appearance on stage.
When the band finally arrives, the 5 members take their respective place, Alison is centre stage, looking lovely, surprisingly modestly attired in a very short black number, showing off her great legs.
To the crowd’s delight, Alison opens the show with a most exquisite, spine tingling rendition of Utopia, and sets the tone for the rest of the evening.
Tonight will not be just a live version of extremely successful latest album ‘Supernature’.
For an hour and a half, Goldfrapp regularly and generously delve into their incredibly rich and superb back catalogue. |

Mid set we travel back to Lp ‘Felt mountain’ with ‘Lovely head’.
The evening is a throbbing, thumping mix of ‘Satin Chic’, ‘Train’, ‘Tiptoe’, ‘Twist’, ‘Fly Me Away’ and much more. In fact all the singles past and present are accounted for.
Some technical problems, the audience is totally unaware of, seem to plague the first half of the show and in between numbers Alison anxiously turns to her drummer.

They encore with ‘Black Cherry’, ‘Number 1’ and finally finish with ‘Strict machine’.
And yes, on appropriate numbers we did get scantily clad dancers, mirrored horses heads and at one point glitter was showered on a mesmerised audience....but all in all the stage was very modestly dressed, proving that Alison is confident talent alone is enough to entertain a few thousand people.

To her credit, she didn’t feel the need to come on stage dangling from the ceiling, there were no pyrotechnics. She didn’t roll on the floor, get lifted in the air by 6 half naked male dancers. There were no contortions, simulated sex or a single leotard in sight.
New and well established artists should look at Alison Goldfrapp and get a lesson on how it should be done.
Long live Goldfrapp.
