The Dirty Feel - Gig Review - London, The 100 Club, 21.3.2006

The Dirty Feel’s Nick, Virgil and Kez, probably the coolest trio to grace a London stage in 2006, are tonight playing the legendary 100 Club, on Oxford Street.

Having seen them live before, I think, very pretentiously, that I know what to expect.
How wrong can one girl be?
From the very first slapping of Kez’s bass on ‘The Man’ I can see that tonight will be different.
The three musicians before us look extremely at ease and comfortable.
Tonight they own the stage and the room.
The 100 Club offers a good quality sound which embellishes The Dirty Feel’s already perfected hooks and Funky beats.

Opening track over and with crowd pleaser ‘Get Down’ and ‘Space Invaders’ to follow, I get the clear impression that their aim this evening is not so much to entertain us as to blow the roof off.
Hadn’t it been for the 5 storeys of concrete above us they might have inflicted some serious structural damage to this symbolic London stop over for any band seriously intending to ‘make it’.

With an EP coming out in May, every gig is a perfect opportunity to showcase their talent and their material. Neither can be faulted.
Nick’s vocal range is interesting and perfectly suited for the job but when required Virgil will take over the mic from behind his drum kit, showing off how versatile this London based ensemble really are.
The Dirty Feel’s sound is still very raw and heavy but somehow beautifully manipulated by musicians very much in control of their live performances.

At times their musical influences, Chili Peppers, Sly and the Family Stone among others, fleetingly pass us by, in the most positive of fashions.

Tonight the guys look good but having gone for the smart casual look. we see none of the beautiful crisps suits that have somehow become a trademark, and I feel a tad let down until mid set, around ‘Love In’ or ‘1 Inch Punch’ Virgil decides to take his shirt off.
Yeah! That’s more like it....

They finish the set with ‘Keep On’ and personal favourite of mine ‘Talk In The City’.
After a brief moment off stage they’re back with one more track ‘Don’t Wanna Go Home’, appropriately summing up my mood.
But I have consoled myself in the knowledge that this dirty bunch will soon be back on a stage, trying to Funk up someone’s evening. Actually first in Swindon and then Bristol....
See! I told you....
