Graham Coxon - Gig Review - London, Hammersmith Palais, 5.4.2006

Graham Coxon has finally arrived.
The path from ex-Blur guitarist to solo star in his own right, has been a rocky ride, but with the release of several classic singles behind him, he is at last his own man.

Playing to an almost packed crowd at Hammersmith Palais, the pace is frantic. With six solo albums to delve into, there is enough material to please everyone present tonight.
The sound is fast and furious with a punk like energy, the songs are short, sharp and sweet and the main bulk of the set is lifted from current album ‘Love Travels At Illegal Speeds’, which has consolidated his status as a solo performer after the success of his previous record ‘Happiness In Magazines’, from which tonight he performs the fine run of singles ‘Bittersweet Bundle Of Misery’, ‘Spectacular’ and the manic ‘Freakin’Out’.

Backed up by a band in tune with Coxon’s nervous energy and with his trademark mockney vocals, a combination of Syd Barrett and Buzzcocks’ Pete Shelley, the crowd respond by surfing and moshing in the pit as if at a hardcore punk show.

Of the new LP, we get ‘People Of The Earth’, first single ‘Standing On My Own Again’ and the encore ‘Who The Fuck’, highlights from a wildly ecstatic performance, which finally puts paid to his moniker as ex-guitarist from Blur.

It’s official Graham Coxon is now Graham Coxon.
